Fun at Crab Island

Written by Bailee Wilson | Jul 10, 2021 1:20:49 PM

If you've never been to the Destin, then Crab Island might sound a little bit weird to you. Crab Island. An island full of crabs? What might catch newcomers the most off guard is that Crab Island isn't an island at all- rather, it is a popular sandbar. There might be some crabs around it sometimes, but most of them are probably underwater! If you're looking for an awesome local hangout on the Emerald Coast this summer, then you should take a boat out to Crab Island and partake in the fun!

The first step to enjoying Crab Island is finding it. Crab Island can be found at the north side of the Destin Bridge at the southern entrance of the Choctawhatchee Bay, just inside Destin’s East Pass. Subject to tidal inflow and outflow yet protected from surf and waves, the location is unique and only accessible by boat. Each day, hundreds of boats gather at Crab Island to enjoy to gorgeous views and lovely Emerald Coast waters. Using their boats as a home base, guests can kayak, paddle board, or jet ski around.

Other popular activities at Crab Island include sunbathing, water volleyball, enjoying a cold beverage, visiting a floating restaurant or mobile food boat, snorkeling, dolphin watching- the options are extensive and excellent!

Because they are easy to drive and can fit larger groups, I recommend renting a pontoon boat for your Crab Island visit. Destin Vacation Boat Rentals is a popular rental option, but there are a variety of great companies to rent from. If you don't want to drive your own boat, however, then you can take the Crab Island shuttle out for a 2.5-3 hour long excursion with tickets starting at $45 per adult.
